Trump ran for president before. In 2000, his sideshow reached epochal lows when, as the Reform Party, candidate he was pilloried by commentator Pat Buchanan for his lack of substance and abundance of hubris. Trump, in turn, swiped back generally referring to Buchanan as “Hitler-lover.”
The cult of Trump quickly faded like a fart in business class and Bush/Gore happened.
Trump went on to become a game show host and a fake birth certificate researcher before re-emerging a decade and a half later as a Republican candidate. From the first rally last June where he paid actors $50 each (not scale) to cheer—through a scorched earth trail of sloganeering, lies, thinly veiled racist rants, calls to violence and derogatory tweets, he is now the GOP’s presumptive nominee.
